The national check and acceptance of Qinshan NPP Phase III Project (Heavy Water Reactor) to be completed was passed on Sept. 22, 2005.
The Check/acceptance Commission considered that the total 104 project items of Qinshan NPP Phase III were assessed the qualitative goodness; the rate of good item is 100%; 112 days earlier than regulated in the main contract signed by China and Canada; saved investment of 305 million USD; in comparison with the reference NPP, the units of Qinshan NPP Phase III conducted design modifications of 99 items, and gained good results; the two units of Qinshan NPP Phase III achieved the advanced level of CANDU6 units in the world up to date, and created valuable experience for developing nuclear power in China; during trail operation, two units operated safely and reliably, generated electricity of 26.5 billion kWh totally, gained good economic and social benefits.
Qinshan Nuclear Power Phase III Project is China's first commercial nuclear power station with two heavy water reactors, one of the national key projects during the 9th Five-year Program. It adopted Canadian mature nuclear power technology of Candu-6 heavy water reactor, and was constructed by international standards. The total capacity installed is 2x728 MWe. Its design life is 40 years. The average annual design capacity factor is 85%. The total construction cost of the Project is US$2.88 billion. The project was launched on Jun. 8, 1998. Its Unit 1 was put into commercial operation on Dec. 31, 2002 with 43 days ahead of schedule. The Unit 2 came into commercial operation on July 24, 2003, 112 days earlier than regulated in the main contract signed by China and Canada.
