In light of the overall planning of the state, the total installed capacity of nuclear power will add up to 40 GW by 2020. On July 21, 2004, the State Council officially approved the Sanmen NPP Phase I in Zhejiang Province and Ling Ao NPP Phase II in Guangdong Province, followed by consent to starting the Extension Project of Qinshan NPP Phase II and Yangjiang NPP Phase I.

The Extension Project of Qinshan NPP Phase II is another 2x650 MW NPP to be constructed by CNNC, which based on the self-designed, constructed, managed and operated Qinshan NPP Phase I and Phase II. This extension project is scheduled to start up formally in March 2006.
